Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice

Every week I stop by the Korean market near our house. December is the month for Fuyu persimmons. These are the last fruits to ripen before the hard frost of winter sets in. They're the ultimate survivors: when all the leaves around them have curled up and fallen off the trees, they're left still clinging to the branches, defying the deathly grip of winter.

The contrast of the glowing orange persimmons against the icy blue of a December night  was what I sought to capture in this painting. The collage element of Japanese ogura lace paper, like frost against a window-pane, and the skeletal leaf fragments, add to the bleak midwinter feel I wanted to convey.
