This painting began with the artful scraping of rough textures onto the surface. Then came the cobalt sky with its blustery clouds, and a lovely ripe tomato soon emerged, floating against the background like an Italian Magritte.
Here again—as in my other tomato paintings—you see the push-pull of positive and negative shapes, and the vivid complementary colors, but in this one, I used a rough-bristle brush and coarse molding paste to create greater depth and contrast between the different layers of paint.
