Emerging from the destruction of war, this dove guides us toward the light. The theme of hope triumphing over despair, of freedom over bondage, peace over war, and resurrection over death, all thread their way through this painting, inspired by John 1:5: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
For anyone who has ever experienced the night of the soul, or a dark place in their life, this painting celebrates the warmth and light that is always there, on the other side of the shadows.
I began this painting by laying down a beautifully textured background of rice paper and pressed leaves. I wasn’t sure exactly what it would become, but as the dark and light grew slowly in multiple transparent layers, my white dove emerged again from the chaos.
Like the Holy Spirit emerging from the crown of thorns, or the dove of peace and freedom escaping the barbed wire of hatred, it is the resilience of the spirit that carries us forward.
