La Bouillabaisse

La Bouillabaisse
mixed media on canvas
18″ x 24″

In the summer of 2000, I spent some time in Marseilles, which is famous for its bouillabaisse. According to the Marseillais, any local bouillabaisse should include “rascasse,” a surprisingly ugly, spiny fish found in the area waters. It certainly does not look tasty, but tasty it is, in the rich broth of a bouillabaisse, and crowned by crostini with their garlic-infused rouille.

So, rascasse became the inspiration for this painting. Then I tossed into the visual stew some vintage ads that evoke Provence, and it brought a smile to my face, my memories brought to a delicious simmer.

Perhaps this will do the same for you, if you have spent time in Provence. It’s well worth the trip, but if you can’t hop a plane right now, this painting will do it for you!
