Good Friday

Good Friday
acrylic on canvas
8″ x 10″

There is a sense of foreboding in this painting. The dark crimson background, stark shadows, and purple undertones all create a sense of melancholy to me. The green-fleshed fig, unceremoniously cut open before its time, is laid out as if on an altar.

Growing up Catholic, Good Friday for me was always a day of turning inward, of prayer and quiet reflection on the long shadows of humanity’s shortcomings, reaching through the centuries. This captured for me the still sadness of that day.
